File formats
The current version of Tumatxa works with two file formats:
- TMX
- .po files
TMX is the standard XML-based exchange format agreed by i18n and l10n associations and companies. Most translation memory software tools use each its own format for memory storage, but they are also compatible with TMX. Systems like Trados or Wordfast can import and export TM in TMX format, and Tumatxa has been tested and proved compatible with those systems. So, you may work with Trados and Tumatxa simultaneously.
.po files are the files in which most free software l10n efforts have been made (for instance, Gnome, Mailman...). It is the format for translation storage of the GNU Gettext methodology.
Actually, .po files, unlike usual TMX files, have no source and target language segments, but instead, have a message ID, and the equivalent message string in a given language. However, in most projects, the message ID tends to be the original source-language text string, an english text portion in most international software products. So, the .po file structure can be paralleled to TMX.
You may upload TMX or .po files with no distinction. And when downloading, transform the output in either one or the other format (order of source and target segments can be reversed as well).
